John Forster was born and raised in Newcastle by Unitarian parents, and educated at Cambridge and London's Inner Temple. He became an important literary critic and editor, and wrote numerous books of his own, notably several biographies. Forster's greatest contribution may have been as literary adviser and advocate for some of the key authors of his day, including Tennyson, Browning, Dickens, and Carlyle. Marjorie Wiggin was the daughter of Albert Henry Wiggin, who retired in 1933 as executive head of the Chase National Bank and was himself a book collector. He is the subject of her 1949 biography, New England son. She married Sherburne Prescott, and by 1929 they were settled at their estate, Hickory Hill, in Greenwich, Connecticut.
